Position: Head of Quantitative Analysis
Contract: Negotiable
Salary Range: £60k - £90k plus benefits, depending on the experience of the candidate.
Location: London EC1

The Company
The Matrix Knowledge Group (TMKG) provides innovative consulting, research, evidence reviews and informatics to international organisations, governments, public service purchasers and providers, private businesses and the charitable sector. We are a growing company and have clients in the healthcare, social care, policing/security, criminal/civil justice, transport, and environmental sectors. Our clients call on Matrix to answer complex questions in high-profile and cutting-edge areas. Questions we have recently been asked to answer include:

how do drug-traffickers operate in the market for illegal drugs;

what are the costs and benefits of prison as a sentence for criminal behaviour;

what works in helping people who are chronically socially excluded;

is the NHS getting better at adopting innovations; and

what is the value of public health interventions?

Having a well established reputation in the UK, we have now expanded our work across Europe and have recently opened an office in the USA. More information on Matrix and examples of our projects can be found at www.matrixknowledge.com

We have recently begun a drive to further improve our methodologies and capabilities to consolidate our reputation and become the provider of choice in our chosen market sectors. This is being led by an internal group of experts who provide methodological support and quality assurance across the TMKG. This group is advised by a network of academics and led by Paul Dolan, Professor of Economics at Imperial College, London and Elliot Stern, Professor of Research Evaluation at Lancaster University.

The role
Strong quantitative analysis underlies much of our work. For over 15 years we have been recognised for our analytic expertise. For example, we analyse client-provided or other data to:

illustrate trends over time and variations across areas or organisational units;

build models to support strategic, planning and operational decisions;

assess user needs for health and social care services;

develop funding or cost models;

conduct simulation and sensitivity analysis to assess the effect of uncertainty on the conclusions of research.

But increasing demand for our services combined with our drive to improve the breadth and depth of services we offer requires a Head of Quantitative Analysis to:

lead our growth in this area through introduction and development of new methods and new clients;

ensure we use appropriate methods in our quantitative analysis;

oversee the delivery of support and advice by our team of analysts; and

increase the skills and capabilities of our analytic and staff.

The Head of Quantitative Analysis will work alongside other specialists within a multi-disciplinary senior team and will manage and supervise a team of analysts.

In the role you will:

direct ‘flagship’ analytic projects that have a high impact or high profile or use cutting-edge methodologies;

develop and lead a team of analysts that is part of our team of methodological experts;

ensure our analytic approaches and methods are best-in-class and fit-for-purpose;

use your knowledge and experience to expand the set of methods and tools that we can use to address the problems and questions that face our clients;

raise client awareness of our capabilities; and

be able to develop innovative analytic applications together with colleagues from across the Matrix Group to grow and develop the business

The individual
You will have:

an excellent track record in conducting and overseeing quantitative analysis from your experience working in government, in academia, for a non-profit organisation, or in the private sector;

an understanding of the types of issues facing our clients and a passion for using quantitative methods to answering questions and solving problems;

a reputation for conducting robust analyses and contributing to the field;

knowledge of the tools and methods used in analysis of quantitative data ranging from use of technical skills (using MS Excel, Access etc), to knowledge of statistical, operational research and mathematical techniques;

the ability to think pragmatically and logically to build models or undertake analysis outside of traditional or academic approaches;

experience of applying quality assurance processes to quantitative analysis;

respect and appreciation of other complementary professional disciplines;

sound commercial judgement and an ability to balance a strong commitment to quality with pragmatism for getting things done within time and resource constraints; and

excellent leadership skills and experience of developing and leading a team within a professional environment.

You will need:

a desire to help Matrix demonstrate excellence in its quantitative analytic work;

to balance a strong commitment to quality with pragmatism for getting things done within time and resource constraints;

a willingness to assist researchers and project managers address methodological issues on a daily basis;

to work effectively as part of a team and value the input of others;

to manage within a busy work schedule while developing self-management skills in others;

to be able to effectively communicate your ideas internally and externally in workshops, seminars, project meetings, and in reports and papers;

to demonstrate credibility, integrity, and respect in working with colleagues and clients;

to be able to effectively communicate your ideas internally and externally in workshops, seminars, project meetings, reports and papers; and

a desire to grow the practice and develop the team in line with the TKMG’s strategy.

The package
The reward package is competitive and will be commensurate with the level of expertise and experience you will bring. This will include: a salary in the range of £60,000 - £90,000, 25 days holiday, non contributory pension or cash alternatives and flexible working options. We also support continuous professional development.

How to apply
To apply for a job with Matrix, please email our application form which you can find on the main recruitment page, your CV and a cover letter which should clearly state that you are applying for the post of Head of Quantitative Analytics to recruitment@tmkg.co.uk

provide examples of your knowledge and application of analytical techniques; and

Usman has been an Executive Director of Matrix since 2003 and became a co-owner in 2005. When Usman joined Matrix as a Managing Consultant in 2001 the focus of his work was in health and he still works for health clients, although his focus now is on the ‘day job’ of running Matrix Insight. This ‘day job’ mirrors fairly closely the three elements of the company’s Business Plan. The ‘organic’ part sees him supporting the Insight team in all things from heading out to meet new clients to ensuring that the company is recruiting the next wave of researchers and consultants. Matrix’s ‘grow along’ work means that the company has to be talking to existing and potential partners, whilst the ‘strategic growth’ strategy gets Usman out to organisations and teams that might become part of the Matrix Insight team through acquisition or merger.

Usman also holds the ‘people and change’ brief at Board level, which encompasses everything from recruitment to training and development.

Before joining Matrix Usman worked in local government before becoming an academic where he latterly worked at London Metropolitan University at Course Director of the International Masters in Public Administration. Alongside his academic post Usman was non-executive Chair at Camden & Islington Community NHS Trust from 1999 to 2002. In 2003 he swapped over to the third sector as first a trustee at Turning Point and then it’s Chair between 2005 and 2007.
